Singapore holds grand welcoming ceremony for Vietnam’s top leader To Lam
VOV.VN - Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and his spouse held a grand state welcoming ceremony on May 29 for To Lam, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and State President, and his spouse during their three-day state visit to Singapore.
At 10:30 a.m., as the motorcade carrying the Vietnamese leader and his spouse arrived at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and his spouse warmly welcomed the Vietnamese leader and the high-level delegation of Vietnam at the entrance.
In a solemn atmosphere, the two leaders walked along the red carpet to the ceremonial podium. President Tharman respectfully invited To Lam to the place of honour as the national anthems of Vietnam and Singapore were played by the military band.
Following the flag salute ceremony, the two leaders introduced members of the two countries’ high-level delegations attending the event.
Vietnam and Singapore have maintained one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic and effective partnerships. Over the past five decades, bilateral relations have continuously expanded, notably with the establishment of a Strategic Partnership in 2013 and its elevation to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2025.
Party General Secretary and State President To Lam’s state visit to Singapore takes place as bilateral ties continue to grow strongly across multiple sectors. The visit is expected to further strengthen political trust, deepen comprehensive cooperation and enhance strategic coordination between the two countries in the coming years.
During the trip, Party General Secretary and President To Lam is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at the Shangri-La Dialogue, marking the first time a Vietnamese Party and State leader has given the opening keynote speech at Asia’s premier defence and security forum.
Hosted annually by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), the Shangri-La Dialogue gathers senior defence officials, policymakers and security experts from around the world. The 2026 edition is expected to welcome more than 550 delegates from over 40 countries.
