PM Pham Minh Chinh visits Al-Zour Refinery in Kuwait
VOV.VN - Vietnamese Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính on November 17 visited the Al-Zour Refinery, as part of his ongoing State visit to Kuwait.
The Al-Zour is a strategic refinery for Kuwait and one of the largest and most advanced in the Middle East. It ranks as the second-largest refinery in the region and is among the top 10 globally in terms of refining capacity.
The project began preparatory work in 2015, with construction starting in 2017, and officially commenced commercial operations at the end of 2022. The total investment is approximately US$27 billion. Major contractors involved include Técnicas Reunidas (Spain), Sinopec (China), and Hanwha Engineering & Construction (Republic of Korea).
The refinery has a designed capacity of about 615,000 barrels per day, contributing approximately 43.5% of Kuwait’s domestic refining capacity. It is managed and operated by the Kuwait National Petroleum Company.
The Vietnamese delegation visited the 16-square-kilometer complex, which includes multiple processing units, an artificial island for product storage with a capacity of roughly 5.6 million barrels, and an export jetty system.
Beyond producing fuels and petrochemicals, the Al-Zour Refinery represents Kuwait’s strategic direction under the “Kuwait Vision 2035” programme, transitioning from a purely oil-extraction economy to a fully integrated refining system that adds domestic value while adhering to advanced environmental standards.
