PM Le Minh Hung begins official visit to Laos

VOV.VN - A high-ranking Vietnamese delegation led by Prime Minister Le Minh Hung arrived in Vientiane on October 8, beginning an official visit to Laos at the invitation of Lao Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith.

This is Prime Minister Le Minh Hung’s first official visit to Laos since taking office. The visit underscores the high priority Vietnam attaches to relations with Laos and is expected to further deepen the “great friendship, special solidarity, comprehensive cooperation and strategic cohesion” between the two countries.

According to Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Manh Cuong, the visit takes place amid complex and unpredictable developments in the regional and global situation, making it particularly important for Vietnam to maintain a peaceful and stable environment and strengthen cooperation with neighbouring countries.

A key focus of the visit is to promote the implementation of agreements and commitments reached by the senior leaders of Vietnam and Laos in recent times.

For Laos, the visit comes only days after the Lao National Assembly elected Saleumxay Kommasith as Prime Minister, creating an opportunity for the two Prime Ministers to discuss orientations and measures to strengthen cooperation between the two Governments in the new period.

Meanwhile, Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thongsavan Phomvihane said the visit demonstrates the special bond between the two countries and the importance Vietnam attaches to Laos–Vietnam relations. It reaffirms the commitment of the two Parties, States and peoples to further nurturing and deepening their great friendship, special solidarity, comprehensive cooperation and strategic cohesion.

The visit comes as Laos and Vietnam enter the first year of implementing the resolutions adopted by the 12th National Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and the 14th National Party Congress of Vietnam.

Vietnam–Laos relations have continued to develop positively, with political ties becoming increasingly substantive. Following the Party congresses of the two countries, General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith paid a state visit to Vietnam, while General Secretary To Lam made a state visit to Laos.

The fact that the top leaders of the two Parties chose each other’s country as their first destination after their respective Party congresses reflects the special priority attached to Vietnam–Laos relations.

Defence and security remain important pillars of bilateral ties, with the two sides closely coordinating to maintain political stability, ensure security and preserve peace and stability along their shared border.

In this context, Prime Minister Le Minh Hung’s visit is expected to provide an opportunity for the two Governments to agree on specific measures to implement high-level agreements and commitments more effectively, particularly in areas where tangible progress and breakthroughs are needed.

The visit also provides an opportunity to lay practical groundwork for major milestones in bilateral relations in 2027. Vietnam and Laos will mark the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation next year.
