Party leader To Lam receives African National Congress official in Hanoi
VOV.VN - General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) To Lam received Nomvula Mokonyane, First Deputy Secretary-General of South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) in Hanoi on May 20.

Lam welcomed the ANC delegation’s visit which he said would help strengthen inter-party relations and further bolster the traditional friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and South Africa.
He also congratulated the ANC on forming a Government of National Unity following South Africa’s 2024 general elections, and expressed hope for the ANC’s continued leadership in building a prosperous and influential nation.
Mokonyane conveyed greetings from ANC President and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and noted the historic ties between the ANC and CPV, forged during the two countries’ respective struggles for independence. She also thanked Vietnam for providing support to South Africa’s liberation and development.
She said her visit from May 17 – 22 aims to implement outcomes from the recent high-level phone call between the two party leaders, reaffirming the ANC’s commitment to enhancing bilateral relations during a time of major transitions both in South Africa and globally.
Mokonyane briefed his host on the results of the May 19 talks between the ANC delegation and the CPV delegation, during which the two sides signed a document on inter-party cooperation. Mokonyane underlined the need to translate the signed document into substantive actions and invited Vietnamese leaders to the G20 Political Parties Conference and G20 Summit in Johannesburg in November 2025.

The Vietnamese Party leader welcomed the signing of the cooperation document and called on both parties to develop concrete plans for cooperation, including exchanges on party-building and leadership, as well as joint training programmes, particularly targeting younger generations.
Both host and guest also agreed to strengthen bilateral economic, trade, and investment cooperation, which they identified as a key pillar of Vietnam – South Africa relations. They also pledged to expand ties in defence, security, culture, and people-to-people exchanges to deepen solidarity and mutual understanding.
The two sides shared views on global issues of mutual concern and reaffirmed their commitment to multilateral cooperation, especially at the United Nations, contributing to peace, fairness, and prosperity in their regions and beyond.
