National Assembly Vice Chairman lauds Vietnam – Brazil friendship
VOV.VN - Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Khac Dinh received Márcio Honaiser, Chairman of the Vietnam – Brazil Parliamentary Friendship Group in Hanoi on August 18, noting that the bilateral relationship has made positive strides in recent years.

The two countries, he said, have coordinated political, economic, and cultural activities, including events marking the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the joint statement upgrading Vietnam – Brazil ties to a Strategic Partnership in November 2024.
Bilateral trade continues to be a highlight in the relationship, reaching nearly US$8 billion in 2024, up 12.2% from 2023. Brazil remains Vietnam’s largest trading partner in Latin America and ranks second in the Americas after the United States.
The Vice Chairman praised the active and effective parliamentary exchanges between the two countries, saying that the delegation’s visit provides an opportunity to discuss measures to strengthen cooperation between the legislatures, thereby supporting the implementation of the Strategic Partnership framework, in line with the state-level visit of the Brazilian President in March 2025 and the meeting between the Vietnamese Prime Minister and the Brazilian President in July 2025.
He suggested that the friendship groups explore the possibility of negotiating and signing a cooperation agreement to create a legal framework to enhance parliamentary ties, build political trust, and foster mutual understanding between legislators and citizens. He also urged early negotiations on a Vietnam–Mercosur Free Trade Agreement, to open markets for each other’s agricultural products, while establishing partnerships in food security, supporting businesses, students, and residents of both countries, and promoting cultural, sports, and tourism exchanges.
For his part, Honaiser reported on the results of the meeting between the two parliamentary friendship groups and highlighted the promising potential of bilateral relations, particularly in trade.
Both sides agreed to continue cooperation at multilateral parliamentary forums such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and to support each other’s positions on regional and international issues. They emphasised peaceful resolution of maritime disputes in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
On this occasion, Vice Chairman Dinh conveyed an invitation from National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man to the President of the Brazilian Senate Davi Alcolumbre and the President of the Chamber of Deputies Hugo Motta for an official visit to Vietnam in the near future.
