Hanoi seminar outlines future directions for Vietnam – US relations
VOV.VN - The Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO) and the US Embassy in Vietnam jointly organised a seminar in Hanoi on October 2, reviewing the outstanding achievements in Vietnam – US relations since normalisation in 1995 and discussing future development directions.

The seminar, titled “30 Years of Vietnam – US Relations: Achievements and Prospects”, brought together experts, policymakers, and representatives from international organisations.
Presentations show over the past 30 years, the Vietnam – US relationship has achieved remarkable progress, becoming a model of international cooperation, especially in politics and diplomacy, economy and trade, science and technology, education, and people-to-people exchanges.
Speaking at the function, VUFO President Phan Anh Son, emphasised that the two countries have gradually overcome differences, built mutual trust, and promoted comprehensive cooperation. The United States is currently Vietnam’s second largest trading partner, while Vietnam ranks among the top trading partners of the United States in Southeast Asia.
Moreover, he said, leading US corporations have increasingly engaged in key sectors such as big data, artificial intelligence, and semiconductor industries in Vietnam.
The seminar also highlighted the vital role of people-to-people exchanges in strengthening bilateral ties. With over 2.3 million Vietnamese Americans and approximately 30,000 Vietnamese students studying in the United States, the Vietnamese community continues to serve as a durable bridge between the two countries.
A key highlight was a report featuring Vietnam’s importance to the United States conducted by the US-based East-West Centre. The report underscored Vietnam’s growing strategic role in US global policy, appearing in multiple strategic frameworks such as ASEAN, APEC, and the Mekong cooperation initiatives.
To maintain the current momentum of effective cooperation, the report pointed out that continuous effort and strong commitment from both sides are required.

In his speech, US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper noted that from the early political steps, the Vietnam – US partnership has evolved into a comprehensive strategic relationship spanning trade, technology, education, law enforcement, and security. He assured that the United States is committed to maintaining fair and reciprocal diplomatic relations, fostering strategic innovation cooperation, and sharing greater responsibilities within the rules-based international order.
During the seminar, the speakers recommended continuing to promote substantive, effective, and sustainable cooperation, as well as strengthening people-to-people connections to further deepen the relationship between the two countries.
The seminar was an important occasion not only to review past achievements but also to define future cooperation directions aimed at building a deep, broad, and long-lasting strategic partnership between Vietnam and the United States.
