Estonia and Vietnam boost digital transformation, innovation cooperation

VOV.VN - Vietnam and Estonia are moving to strengthen cooperation in digital transformation, innovation, and high-tech sectors, leveraging complementary strengths to advance bilateral ties in a more substantive and future-oriented direction.

The orientation was discussed during talks between Vietnamese Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung and his Estonian counterpart Margus Tsahkna in Hanoi on April 23, during the latter’s official visit to Vietnam.

Trung welcomed Tsahkna’s visit, describing it as a strong signal of Estonia’s commitment to enhancing multifaceted cooperation with Vietnam, particularly as it marks one of the first high-level visits from a European Union member state following Vietnam’s recent leadership consolidation.

Vietnam wishes to further strengthen its traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Estonia, a key partner in the Nordic and Baltic region, he told his guest.

Tsahkna, for his part, affirmed that Estonia attaches importance to developing relations with Vietnam. He expressed strong admiration for the country’s socio-economic achievements as well as its rising role and standing in the region and globally.

He highlighted Estonia’s desire to further step up cooperation with Vietnam in areas of its strength, including science and technology and innovation, while promoting more practical forms of collaboration among government agencies, localities, universities, and businesses of the two countries.

Both sides agreed that Vietnam and Estonia hold significant untapped potential for cooperation, especially in areas aligned with emerging development trends such as the digital economy, science and technology, education, and maritime economy.

Digital transformation and e-government development emerged as key pillars of cooperation. Minister Trung spoke highly of Estonia’s global reputation in building digital governance, online public services, and an innovation-driven ecosystem. He expressed Vietnam’s interest in learning from Estonia’s experience to accelerate administrative reform and modernise public governance.

On economic cooperation, the two ministers underscored the need to strengthen business connectivity, facilitate trade promotion, and encourage enterprises to explore investment opportunities in sectors of mutual interest.

Trung, on this occasion, called on Estonia to support the early ratification of the EU–Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) by remaining EU member states.

Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to multilateralism and international law, agreeing to maintain close coordination at regional and global forums, including the United Nations and ASEAN–EU frameworks, contributing to peace, stability, and sustainable development.
