Cuban leader Miguel Diaz-Canel begins State visit to Vietnam
VOV.VN - First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of Cuba Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez and First Lady Lis Cuesta Peraza arrived in Hanoi on August 31, beginning a three-day State visit to Vietnam and attend celebrations marking Vietnam’s 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day.

The visit has been made at the invitation of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam To Lam and his spouse.
The Cuban leader and his entourage were welcomed at Noi Bai International Airport by Nguyen Xuan Thang, Politburo member, Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council, and President of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, alongside other officials of Vietnam.
The visit reaffirms the enduring solidarity between Vietnam and Cuba that supports cooperation and development of both countries for the legitimate interests of both peoples, while contributing to peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and the rest of the world.
Despite geographical distance, the traditional solidarity, special friendship, and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Cuba have become a model in international relations.
Over the past 65 years, bilateral cooperation has expanded deeply across all levels, channels, and sectors, built on three main pillars, namely political-diplomatic ties, economic-trade-investment cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges.
The two sides have regularly maintained high-level exchanges and visits. Notably, the State visit to Cuba by General Secretary and President To Lam in September 2024 was considered a historic milestone, opening a new phase in the special relationship between the two countries. Bilateral cooperation mechanisms such as the Theoretical Workshop between the two Parties, the Inter-Governmental Committee, the Inter-Parliamentary Forum, and Political Consultations between the two Foreign Ministries have all contributed practically to building political trust.
On economy, Vietnam is currently Cuba’s second-largest trading partner and the largest investor from the Asia-Pacific region. Its practical support in ensuring Cuba’s food security, through joint projects in rice, maize, and aquaculture production, has been warmly recognised by the Cuban people and the international community. In early 2025, the first harvest of Vietnam’s rice development project in Cuba achieved an impressive yield of 7.2 tonnes per hectare, 4.5 times higher than the local average.
Most recently, Vietnam launched the nationwide campaign “65 Years of Vietnam–Cuba Solidarity” to raise contributions in support of the Cuban people in overcoming current difficulties.
