Canadian PM supports enhanced cooperation with Vietnam
VOV.VN - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on November 16 voiced his support for ramming up cooperation in all fields with Vietnam during his meeting with Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong on the sidelines of the 30th APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in San Francisco, USA.

Trudeau highly appreciated Vietnam’s impressive economic growth in recent times and affirmed that Canada attaches importance to relations with the Southeast Asian nation.
Amid global complications, Canada prioritises promoting relations with Vietnam, especially in the fields of politics-diplomacy, economy, trade, education-training, defense – security, and people-to-people exchanges, he stressed.
Thuong for his part thanked Canada for the goodwill, and proposed that the two countries maintain visit exchanges at all levels, as well as existing cooperation mechanisms on politics-diplomacy, defense-security, economy and trade.
He also proposed that Trudeau and the Canadian Government continue creating favourable conditions for the Vietnamese community to live and work stably in their host country.
At the same time, he asked Canada to provide continued support for Vietnam to engage more actively and effectively in peacekeeping operations.
The two leaders shared the view that the Vietnam - Canada Comprehensive Partnership has been developing vigorously in recent times, with two-way trade turnover reaching more than US$7 billion last year, up nearly 17% compared to the previous year, Vietnam is Canada’s largest trading partner in ASEAN, while Canada is Vietnam’s second largest trading partner in the Americas.
Cooperation in education - training and people-to-people exchanges has been strongly promoted, with nearly 20,000 Vietnamese students studying in Canada, ranking eighth in terms of the number of international students in the country.
There are approximately 300,000 Vietnamese nationals living and working in Canada, serving as important bridge between the two countries.
Trudeau said he is looking forwards to visiting Vietnam again.
The two leaders also exchanged views on a number of regional and international issues of mutual concern, including the East Sea issue. They vowed to further strengthen cooperation and support each other at multilateral forums, including the United Nations and APEC, and promote the role of international law.
