VOV.VN - An official of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) has expressed Cambodia’s gratitude to Vietnam for helping overthrow the Khmer Rouge regime and liberate Cambodia in 1979.

Without support and assistance from Vietnamese volunteer soldiers, it is very difficult for Cambodia to overthrow the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime, said CPP spokesperson Sok Eysan.

Sok Eysan was speaking at a press briefing in Phnom Penh on December 2 to mark the 44th anniversary of the Cambodia United Front for National Salvation, now the Solidarity Front for the Development of the Cambodian Matherland.

It was the wholehearted support and assistance that the Cambodian people will forever remember, he stressed.

The Cambodia United Front for National Salvation was founded on December 2, 1978, and with assistance from Vietnamese volunteer soldiers Cambodia toppled the genocidal regime of Khmer Rouge on January 7, 1979.

In a congratulatory message on this occasion, Prime Minister Hun Sen noted the January 7, 1979 victory put an end to the darkest period in Cambodian history and ushered in a new era, enabling the Cambodian people to regain their freedom and the opportunity to rebuild the country.
