Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai has said that it is imperative to conduct quality control checks at the Son La Hydroelectric power Plant and to speed up resettlement programmes and ensure that the people being relocated receive proper support.

Mr Hai on May 10 praised work carried out by the State Council in investigating and evaluating the construction of the plant and called on investors and contractors to strictly implement the council’s findings to ensure the work is of the highest standard.

Almost VND1.3 trillion (US$72.5 million) was reportedly disbursed in the first four months of this year, with the 2009 disbursement plan being valued at VND4.8 trillion.

The deputy prime minister urged the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and concerned localities to speed up the construction of resettlement areas and prepare to move approximately 4.500 households this year. The welfare of those resettled must also be ensured.

MARD has liased with the provinces of Son La, Dien Bien and Lai Chau before they submit their resettlement plans to the Prime Minister in the second quarter this year.

The three provinces had approved a compensation package for 25,637 displaced households. In the resettlement areas, land has also been provided for cultivation and breeding livestock.
