Deputy PM meets UK, Polish counterparts and FedEx CEO on sidelines of UNGA 80

VOV.VN - Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son met UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, Polish Deputy Prime Minister Radoslaw Sikorski and FedEx CEO Raj Subramaniam on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 24.

Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son expressed his pleasure at the reunion and congratulated David Lammy, former UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs in his capacity.

He affirmed that Vietnam attaches great importance to strengthening the Strategic Partnership with the UK and welcomed the robust progress in bilateral ties in recent years.

To further boost cooperation, he proposed stepping up delegation exchanges, especially among key leaders in 2025 on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Strategic Partnership, and discussing orientations to elevate relations to new heights.

For his part, Deputy PM David Lammy underscored Vietnam’s rising role and position regionally and globally, voiced support for Vietnam’s plan to build a regional and international financial center, and expressed interest in expanding cooperation in migration, renewable energy, and science and technology.

He also stressed the UK’s continued support for Vietnam in climate change adaptation, particularly the effective implementation of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).

The two sides agreed to effectively carry out existing bilateral cooperation mechanisms and leverage the UK’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) to unlock the potential for deeper collaboration.

The same day, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son held talks with Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Radoslaw Sikorski.

In a friendly atmosphere, both sides valued the long-standing traditional friendship spanning 75 years (1950-2025) and concurred that the two countries enjoy favorable opportunities to elevate relations. Deputy PM Son expressed appreciation for Poland’s valuable support to Vietnam in its national development.

He suggested close coordination to fully and effectively implement outcomes of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s official visit to Poland in January 2025, while increasing high-level delegation exchanges in celebration of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

He also called on the Polish Parliament to soon ratify the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) and to advocate within the European Commission for lifting the “yellow card” warning on Vietnam’s seafood exports.

Minister Sikorski shared these views, affirming that Poland regards Vietnam as an important partner in Southeast Asia. Recalling his own profound impressions of Vietnam, he proposed revamping cooperation in trade, investment, labor, science and technology, education and training, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.

The two sides also consented to maintain close coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums and exchanged views on regional and international issues of shared concern.

In the afternoon, Deputy PM Son received Raj Subramaniam, President and Chief Executive Officer of FedEx. Deputy Prime Minister Son congratulated FedEx on its successful business operations in Vietnam and acknowledged its contributions to normalizing and forging bilateral relations, particularly during the 30th anniversary of normalization and the second anniversary of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership upgrade.

He affirmed that the US is one of Vietnam’s top partners and noted that both governments are actively working to sustain momentum and create new opportunities across all fields. The Vietnamese Party and State, he emphasized, consistently facilitate favorable conditions for domestic and foreign enterprises, including US companies, to invest and operate effectively and sustainably in Vietnam.

FedEx CEO Raj Subramaniam thanked the Deputy Prime Minister for the meeting and welcomed the Vietnamese leaders’ commitment to improving the business environment and the strong support of ministries and agencies for US firms.

He applauded Vietnam’s socio-economic development strategy, particularly its focus on science and technology, innovation, and infrastructure development, including airports.

He highlighted that Vietnam and the US have effectively deal with trade issues, thereby creating a stable and sustainable framework for bilateral economic cooperation. On this basis, FedEx is pursuing plans to expand operations in Vietnam and expressed hope for continued facilitation by Vietnamese government agencies.
