The education and training sector needs to look at overall academic results and their shortcomings in a serious and efficient manner to effectively implement all the resolutions adopted at the second congress of the Party Central Committee, said the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Training, Nguyen Thien Nhan.

A national congress was held in Hanoi on June 25 to announce the Political Bureau’s conclusions on healthcare, population, science and education and to discuss an action programme that will enable the Party Central Committee’s resolutions to be brought into effect.

The tasks and solutions focus on improving the quality of comprehensive education, enhancing the State’s management of education and training, changing the structures of universities, colleges and high schools and developing a contingent of qualified teachers.

For pre-school education, the focus will be on implementing a program to universalise pre-school education for five-year-old children to help them with the necessary skills before they entering grade-one.

For high school education, textbook programmes will continue to be maintained from now until 2015.

For higher education, the education and training sector will finish putting together training programmes in two areas where between 70-80 percent of students will study applied sciences and mathematic and between 20-30 percent of students will follow areas of research.

Mr Nhan also asked the sector to attach more importance to educating pupils and students in personal standards and healthy ways of living by following the movement of “To study and follow late President Ho Chi Minh’s moral example” and other movements to create a healthy teaching environment and prevent bad influences.
