Conference marks decade of Vietnam-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
VOV.VN - The Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, in coordination with the Indian Embassy in Vietnam, hosted a an academic conference in Hanoi on September 15 titled "10 Years of the Vietnam-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership: Achievements and Prospects."
The event featured three thematic sessions focusing on the foundations, strategic stature, and milestones of the bilateral partnership over the past decade; evaluations of core cooperation pillars; and new growth drivers and breakthrough areas for future bilateral ties.
Established in 1972, diplomatic relations between Vietnam and India have steadily grown, which were upgraded to a Strategic Partnership in 2007 and a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2016.
Cooperation has expanded across trade, economics, science, education, culture, and people-to-people exchanges, alongside emerging fields such as digital transformation, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, marine science, and clean energy, thereby contributing to deepening bilateral ties.
Delivering the opening remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Hai Binh, member of the Party Central Committee and Permanent Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, noted that 2026 marks the 10th anniversary of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (2016-2026), ushering in a new development phase with the framework upgraded to an enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Binh outlined three key shifts in bilateral relations: transitioning from political trust and friendship to a profound convergence of interests; moving from sporadic cooperation to institutionalized mechanisms; and extending bilateral frameworks to make clearer contributions to regional peace, stability, and development. He emphasized that alongside consolidating political trust, both sides must turn national potentials into substantive, high-impact cooperative outcomes.
At the conference, Bastian Nonginiyil Chacko, Deputy Ambassador of India to Vietnam, affirmed that India-Vietnam relations are built on a solid historical foundation cultivated by generations of leaders. The elevation of bilateral ties reflects a high degree of political trust and a shared resolve to foster deeper, more substantive cooperation.
Chacko noted great achievements across trade, defence, security, education, and training, adding that economic ties continue to expand toward higher bilateral trade targets. People-to-people exchanges and cultural cooperation, fostered through Buddhist ties, yoga, and direct aviation links, further reinforce the social foundation between the two nations.
Chacko stressed that bilateral ties hold vast potential, particularly in economy, technology, education, defense, and culture. Both nations share a vision for a peaceful, stable, free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific, thereby making positive contributions to regional and global peace and development.
