The national strategy on climate change for 2050 with a vision for 2100 were discussed at an international workshop in Hanoi on April 21 after being revised twice by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

The event, drawing crowds of representatives from international donors, foreign corps and non-governmental organizations, heard Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha’s report on Vietnam’s efforts to encounter climate change impact.

Vietnam considers efforts to cope with climate change a vital issue as the country is potentially one of the worst-affected nations, said the deputy minister.

The World Bank representative recommended the country set priorities for climate change adaptation in the face of limited funding.

Official development assistance (ODA) attraction, legal upgrade and stronger financial mechanisms would work in raising funds for the effort to cope with climate change, said the WB expert.

A representative from the Danish Embassy in Vietnam advised Vietnam to diversify cooperative methods and create multilateral partnerships.

International donors reached a consensus on stronger cooperation with and assistance for Vietnam in addressing climate change and its impact on the environment, economy and society.
