Chinese media expect new chapter in China-Vietnam relations
VOV.VN - The State visit to China by General Secretary and President To Lam has captured wide attention from Chinese media, with expectations that it will open a new chapter in bilateral ties.
On April 14, People’s Daily, the official mouthpiece of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, gave prominent coverage to the visit and an article by General Secretary and President To Lam.
On the same day, the Global Times, a publication of People’s Daily, also published an editorial titled “Expecting a new chapter in building a China-Vietnam Community with a shared future.”
The editorial stressed, “Strategic guidance by the top leaders of the two Parties and two countries is the greatest advantage and the most important political guarantee for the development of China-Vietnam relations.” Under such strategic direction, the two Parties and two countries have established a comprehensive, multi-level and multi-dimensional framework for dialogue and cooperation.
It noted that since the announcement in December 2023 of building a China-Vietnam Community with a shared future of strategic significance, bilateral relations have entered a new phase, with higher political trust, more substantive defence and security cooperation, deeper practical cooperation, a stronger social foundation, closer multilateral coordination, and better management and settlement of differences. Comprehensive strategic cooperation between the two sides has achieved major results.
According to the editorial, in addition to strong growth in trade, investment and tourism, mutually beneficial cooperation in emerging sectors such as new energy and artificial intelligence (AI) has also deepened under the guidance of the bilateral cooperation steering committee. The China-Vietnam Community with a shared future has delivered practical benefits to people in both countries.
The editorial said the successful convening of the first meeting of the ministerial-level “3+3” strategic dialogue mechanism on foreign affairs, defence and public security between China and Vietnam demonstrates “an upgrading of strategic trust between the two countries.” It added: “Facts have repeatedly shown that building a China-Vietnam Community with a shared future of strategic significance is in line with the common interests of both countries and contributes to peace, stability, development and prosperity in the region and the world.”
It also noted that as China and Vietnam, with a combined population of more than 1.5 billion, both pursue modernisation, their experience will offer useful lessons for developing countries and emerging economies in achieving their own modernisation goals. Continued progress in exchanges across political, economic and cultural fields has also become an important foundation for the two countries to participate in global governance and maintain regional stability.
The editorial concluded that from the traditional friendship described as “both comrades and brothers” to the contemporary positioning of a “Community with a shared future of strategic significance,” China-Vietnam relations stand at a new historic starting point. “We welcome the visit to China by General Secretary To Lam and look forward to a new chapter in building a China-Vietnam Community with a shared future, bringing practical benefits to the people of both countries and adding positive energy to the region and the world.”
Commenting on the visit in an interview with China News Service, Do Lan, deputy director of the Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies under the China Institute of International Studies, said frequent and high-quality high-level exchanges between the two countries show that China–Vietnam relations have gone beyond the conventional meaning of friendly neighbours and are moving towards a new phase of building a Community with a shared future at a higher and more strategic level, with stronger substantive cooperation.
Commenting on the visit in an interview with China News Service, Du Lan, Deputy Director of the Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies under the China Institute of International Studies, said frequent and high-quality high-level exchanges between the two countries show that China-Vietnam relations have gone beyond the conventional notion of friendly neighbours and are moving towards a new period of building a Community with a shared future at a higher and more strategic level, with further strengthening of substantive cooperation.
“The focus of cooperation between the two countries has been raised from conventional trade to deeper strategic connectivity, with accelerated connectivity between the Belt and Road Initiative and Vietnam’s ‘Two Corridors, One Belt’ initiative. Hard connectivity in infrastructure, including railways, highways and border gates, is being stepped up, while soft connectivity such as smart customs has also made notable progress. In the future, integration of industrial and supply chains is set to be further intensified.”
China Report ASEAN, a publication of the national-level magazine China Report, also published an article stating that the visit to China by General Secretary and President To Lam is the most important bilateral diplomatic event between the two Parties and two countries in 2026, “of historic significance” and a major strategic milestone in China-Vietnam relations.
