Chile prioritises cooperation with Vietnam

Chile is committed to strengthening cooperation with Vietnam, especially in the areas of mineral exploitation, science-technology, agriculture and education, says Senate President Guido Girardin Lavín.

The visiting Chilean President made the statement during talks with Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung in Hanoi on February 28.

Chile wants to cooperate with Vietnam in applying scientific and technological advances to mineral exploitation to protect the ecological environment, said Lavín.

With its experience and achievements in agriculture, Chile is able to cooperate with Vietnam in farm produce processing, fruit exports, food industry and salmon breeding, he said.

The Senate President proposed that both countries start negotiations and sign cooperation agreements in the areas of their mutual concern so as to boost bilateral relations.

NA Chairman Hung welcomed the Chilean Senate president’s proposals and confirmed that Vietnam wants to strengthen relations with Chile, as well as other Latin American countries.

Vietnam is willing to serve as a bridge for Chile to increase cooperation with other countries in Southeast Asia, said Mr Hung.

He briefed his guest on Vietnam’s development potential and said the Southeast Asian nation is ready to cooperate with Chile in agriculture, aquaculture, environmental protection, and climate change adaptation.

Mr Hung proposed that the two countries increase the efficiency of the inter-governmental committee to promote bilateral cooperation in all areas, as well as their legislative activities.

He said Vietnam and Chile need to work closely in regional and international inter-parliamentary forums, especially the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and the European Union (EU), to address global issues.

The NA Chairman expressed his belief that the Senate President’s visit will help deepen the traditional friendship and cooperative relations between the two countries and at the same time beef up cooperation between their legislative bodies.

Guido Girardin Lavín arrived in Hanoi on February 27, beginning an official six-day visit to Vietnam at the invitation of NA Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung.
