Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, representing his Government, sent wishes to the Vietnamese people on the occasion of the Lunar New Year (Tet) festival.

Mr Harper said the Lunar New Year is an occasion for Vietnamese people to get together with their family and friends. It also marks the important contributions the Vietnamese community in Canada has made to Canadian society.

He said many Canadians of Vietnamese descent are creating a cultural hallmark in many cities and towns across Canada.

About 260,000 Vietnamese-Canadians are living, working and studying in 10 provinces and three territories of the North American country.
