David Johnston visited the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, under the Hanoi-based National University, on November 17 during his State visit to the country from November 16-19, at the invitation of State President Truong Tan Sang.
While talking to local students, the Governor General highlighted Canada’s close relationship with Vietnam, which has been constantly developed by both countries.
He emphasized the important role of culture in boosting mutual understanding.
At present, about 250,000 Vietnamese people are living in Canada and making contributions to various fields, he said, adding that his entourage also includes two Vietnamese nationals, namely Prof. Luong Van Hy from Toronto University, and writer Kim Thuy.
David Johnston also visited Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam (the Temple of Literature – the first university of Vietnam), and a farm that produces organic vegetables in Yen My commune, in Hanoi’s outlying district of Thanh Tri.
Also on November 17, the Canadian delegation laid a wreath at the Monument of Heroic Martyrs in Hanoi.
Later the same day, Governor General David Johnston was received by Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung.
