The statement was made at a meeting with Can Tho City’s Party Committee on February 16 to review the implementation of its seven-year development plan.

Mr Trong said the city should consider the situation in the whole region to work out plans for long-term and sustainable development.

“Development should go together with restructuring the economy to enhance its quality, effectiveness and competitiveness, ensure social welfare, improve people’s living standard, and maintain political stability and national defence,” he said.

The General Secretary added that such improvements will provide the groundwork for rapid growth from now until 2015.
