Bulgaria,Vietnam expand locality-to-locality cooperation
VOV.VN - Vietnamese Ambassador to Bulgaria Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet recently attended the Veliko Tarnovo City Festival and met Mayor Daniel Panov to promote cooperation between the city and Vietnamese localities.
Veliko Tarnovo, in northern Bulgaria, was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire from the 12th to 14th centuries and is known for its medieval architecture and the Tsarevets Fortress. The city is regarded as one of Bulgaria’s key cultural and historical centres and a symbol of independence and national revival. It is also where the country’s first Constitution was drafted and adopted in 1879 after liberation from the Ottoman Empire. Veliko Tarnovo is a popular tourist destination, hosting cultural festivals and events throughout the year. The city welcomed nearly 400,000 visitors in 2025.
The Veliko Tarnovo City Festival was attended by senior Bulgarian officials, including National Assembly Chair Natalya Kiselova, Deputy Speaker Kostadin Angelov, former President Rumen Radev, along with other officials and local representatives.
At the meeting with Mayor Daniel Panov, Ambassador Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet expressed thanks for the warm reception and congratulated the city on the successful organisation of the festival, which reflects its historical depth and distinctive cultural identity. She said the traditional friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Bulgaria have continued to be strengthened, especially after the two countries upgraded ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Party General Secretary To Lam’s official visit to Bulgaria in October 2025.
Cooperation between localities, she said, is an important pillar. The ambassador said the Vietnamese Embassy is ready to act as a bridge to ramp up cooperation between Veliko Tarnovo and Vietnamese localities in the coming period.
Mayor Daniel Panov welcomed the participation of the Vietnamese Embassy delegation at the city’s major event. He expressed a wish to strengthen cooperation with Vietnam in culture and tourism, education and training, trade and labour, and said the city will create favourable conditions to connect partners from both sides. He added that invitations will be sent to Vietnamese delegations to attend major events in 2026, including the International Folklore Festival (June-July) and the International Cultural Tourism Fair (October). He also proposed organising a tourism seminar, connecting travel businesses, and promoting Vietnamese culture in Veliko Tarnovo.
The meeting took place in a friendly atmosphere and set out directions for cooperation between localities of the two countries, thereby further strengthening the Vietnam-Bulgaria Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
