The Vietnam-Laos special relations of friendship, solidarity and cooperation have made substantial progress in such areas as trade, investment, transport, hydro electric power generation, mineral exploitation and industrial crops cultivation.

State President Nguyen Minh Triet and his wife and entourage arrived in Vientiane on February 5 for an official friendship visit to Laos. After the welcome ceremony, Mr Triet held talks with President Choummaly Sayasone who is General Secretary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party.

The two leaders pledged to continue consolidating the relations of friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Laos fostered by the two late Presidents, Ho Chi Minh and Kaysone Phomvihane and by generations of the two countries’ people and soldiers, considering this a key task in the cause of national construction and defense of each country.

The two presidents were delighted to see that the Vietnam-Laos special relations of friendship, solidarity and cooperation have made substantial progress in such areas as trade, investment, transport, hydro electric power generation, mineral exploitation and industrial crop cultivation.

They underscored the need to further consolidate the special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos in the face of the fast changing international and regional situations and described this as an important factor in the success of national construction and defense. In that spirit, they reaffirmed their determination to effectively implement cooperation agreements aimed at bringing bilateral relations to a higher plane.

The two Presidents informed each country of current preparations for the 45th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties and the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Friendship and Cooperation Agreement between the two countries.

President Nguyen Minh Triet and President Chummaly Sayasone expressed their delight at the effective results of mutual assistance and cooperation in foreign affairs at international and regional forums, including the United Nations, Francophone, Non-Aligned Movement, ASEAN, and ASEM, especially of implementing East-West Corridor projects and strengthening cooperation in the Mekong Sub-region, the Mekong Commission and ACMECS, as well as between Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam. The two Presidents agreed to further cooperate with Cambodia to successfully build the development triangle between Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.

After the talks, Presidents Nguyen Minh Triet and Chummaly Sayasone witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Lao National Sport Committee and the Vietnam Committee for Sports and Physical Training, under which Vietnam will provide non-refundable aid for Laos to build a national sport training centre.

In the afternoon, State President Nguyen Minh Triet met with Prime Minister Buason Bupphavan, National Assembly Chairman Thongsing Thammavong, and National Construction Front President Sisavath Keobounphanh.

During these meetings, the Lao leaders affirmed that they will do their best to foster the relations of friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos. They pledged to actively implement the signed agreements with a view to bringing bilateral relations to a new height.

President Nguyen Minh Triet said that Vietnam will continue to assist Laos in developing its economy, reducing poverty and further integrating into the world community. President Triet noted that Vietnam completely supports Laos’ efforts to join the World Trade Organisation by sharing experiences with the country without any need of bilateral negotiations.

The same day, President Nguyen Minh Triet laid a wreath at the Monument to Unknown Soldiers and received the Vietnam-Laos Friendship Association.
