Over a journey of more than 50 years (1973-2026), bilateral relations between Vietnam and Belgium have been continuously consolidated and flourished across various fields, particularly politics-diplomacy, trade, agriculture, education and training, scientific-technological cooperation, and development cooperation, at the federal, regional, and community levels.
Belgium always attaches importance to relations with Vietnam, highly appreciates the country's economic development, and serves as an international partner actively contributing to Vietnam's success through development cooperation programs. Both sides actively coordinate at multilateral forums, especially at the United Nations, and within the frameworks of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)- European Union (EU) cooperation.
In recent years, economic and trade cooperation between Vietnam and Belgium has grown rapidly and strengthened increasingly. Belgium is currently Vietnam's sixth-largest trading partner in the EU, while Vietnam is Belgium's largest trading partner in ASEAN.
This official visit by Party General Secretary and State President To Lam to Belgium takes place at a time when bilateral relations enjoy a favorable foundation after more than 50 years of diplomatic ties (1973-2026) and eight years of implementing the Strategic Partnership in Agriculture framework (2018-2026), characterized by high political trust as well as deepening understanding and connection.
The visit contributes to elevating Vietnam-Belgium relations to a new height and creating breakthroughs in cooperation across areas of strength for both nations.
