Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister-cum-Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem presided over an unofficial meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers held on September 23 in New York on the sidelines of the 65th session of the UN General Assembly.

The ministers discussed a number of issues related to ASEAN and the United Nations, including preparations for the 17th ASEAN Summit and related meetings in Hanoi from October 28-30.

They preliminarily agreed on the draft of a plan for connecting ASEAN and on possible invitations to Russia and the US to attend the East Asia Summit 2011.

The foreign ministers also discussed preparations for the second Meeting of ASEAN-US leaders scheduled for September 24 in New York, as well as the third ASEAN-United Nations Summit to be held in Hanoi this October.

The ASEAN countries applauded Vietnam’s preparations and pledged to cooperate with the host country to achieve further unity and connection.
