More than 100 delegates from ASEAN countries and their six dialogue partners are gathering in Hanoi for the 21st ASEAN Senior Officials on the Environment (ASOEN) conference which opened on August 4.  

Addressing the opening ceremony, ASOEN President, Vannmonyneath emphasised that climate change is big challenge for ASEAN nations in particular and the world in general, affecting every countries’ socio-economic development. As most are coastal countries, he said they should work together to deal with climate change, discuss measures to resolve environmental issues in the region, and make new international commitments.

During the week-long event, delegates will review activities of ASEAN’s working groups and other issues related to the environment, coastal regions, a multilateral environmental agreement, nature conservation and bio-diversity, and the management of natural resources.

They will also discuss urban environmental issues including the related to 3R policy (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle), the efficiency of natural resources, the bio-diversity city model, and state management.

Vietnam joined ASOEN in February 1996. After 14 years, the country has held 11 ASOEN conferences and related meetings successfully.
