By March 6, all Vietnamese workers in Libya, estimated at 10.334, had left the unrest-ravaged country, said a labour official.

Nguyen Xuan Tao, Deputy Head of the Labour Management Section of the Vietnamese Overseas Workers Management Department under the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, said that more than 7,000 have returned home so far, not including 210 workers who are scheduled to land at Noi Bai airport at 11:30 pm on March 6.

Other workers remaining stranded include 1,200 in Tunisia, 650 in Turkey, 292 in Algeria, 150 in Greece and 65 in Egypt.

The Vietnamese government’s working teams and embassy staff in those countries have closely worked with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and a number of international relief aid organizations to ensure food and medicine for Vietnamese workers and arrange flights for them to quickly return home.

Meanwhile, the Vietnam Aviation Corporation (Vietnam Airlines) will operate an additional flight to Djerba, Tunisia, on March 8 to carry Vietnamese workers back home.

The flight will land at Djerba airport at 4pm on March 8 (local time), and is expected to return to Noi Bai airport in Hanoi at 10:25am on March 9 (Vietnam time).

This is the 10th flight by Vietnam Airlines to bring home Vietnamese workers from Libya.

So far, Vietnam Airlines has carried 3,000 Vietnamese from Libya’s borders with Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey back to Vietnam.
