The career and personality of late Party General Secretary Le Duan were in the spotlight at a conference in Hanoi on April 3 that featured the presentation of more than 50 papers.

The conference aimed to assess the late Party leader’s contributions to the country’s revolutionary struggles, according to organizers from the Ho Chi Minh National Political Academy and the Provincial Party Committee in Quang Tri, where he was born under his real name Le Van Nhuan in 1907.

Le Duan was the Party’s First Secretary and later the Party General Secretary from 1960 to 1986. Some papers at the conference said that he was instrumental in working with the Politburo and the Party Central Committee on plans to carry out the then on-going people’s wars.

His leadership helped the Communist Party of Vietnam to successfully guide the people to implement revolutionary missions in both northern and southern Vietnam and contributed to the country’s 1975 victory in the resistance war against the US invaders, the papers concluded.

"Le Duan had always thought deeply, analysed and dealt with emerging issues based on new developments," stated a historical Party document. "His insights were always valuable at the historical milestones and during complicated situations."

Most of the papers tabled at the conference noted Le Duan as a strong and steadfast communist, an outstanding leader and a great thinker whose initiatives contributed to successes of the Vietnamese revolution. The papers also noted the late leader was an excellent student of President Ho Chi Minh, the founder of the Party.
