80th National Day: Moving celebration in Malaysia

In a vibrant atmosphere ahead of the grand national festival, the Vietnamese Embassy in Malaysia solemnly held a ceremony on August 27 to mark the 80th anniversary of the National Day of Vietnam (September 2).

The event was attended by Malaysian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohamad bin Haji Hasan, Deputy President of the Senate Nur Jazlan bin Tan Sri Mohamed, representatives of diplomatic missions and international organisations, and a large number of Vietnamese people in Malaysia.

In his remarks, Vietnamese Ambassador Dinh Ngoc Linh recalled the nation’s glorious milestones, from the historic moment when President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence proclaiming the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, to the country’s remarkable journey to become one of the world’s 40 leading economies.

He emphasised that under the leadership of the Party and Government, Vietnam is entering an “era of national rise” with the ambition of becoming an innovation hub and ranking among the world’s top 30 in digital competitiveness and e-government by 2030. This era, he noted, focuses on breakthrough development to elevate Vietnam’s position in the international community by maximising domestic strengths, particularly in science, technology, and innovation.

Linh reaffirmed Vietnam’s strong commitment to green growth, digital transformation, and net-zero emissions by 2050. He appreciated the support from international partners over the past 80 years and reaffirmed Vietnam’s targets by 2030, including being among the top three in Southeast Asia for artificial intelligence research, and a hub for leading global technology enterprises.

The diplomat also highlighted a key milestone in Vietnam – Malaysia relations, noting that the two countries elevated their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in November 2024. He stressed that Vietnam is proud to be Malaysia’s only comprehensive strategic partner in Southeast Asia.

For his part, Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad bin Haji Hasan extended warm congratulations on Vietnam’s National Day. Together with Ambassador Linh, he joined in the ceremonial cake-cutting, symbolising solidarity and friendship between the two countries.

Overseas Vietnamese participants also expressed heartfelt emotions. Ma Ri Dam, head of the liaison board for the Cham ethnic community in Malaysia, said she was deeply moved to attend the ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day. She said she felt happy and proud to witness the glory of the nation and hoped Vietnam will grow stronger and stand shoulder to shoulder with world powers.

Meanwhile, expatriate Dinh Thu Ha expressed pride in witnessing Vietnam’s achievements and the growth of the Vietnamese community in Malaysia.

Malaysian guests also shared their sentiments. Professor Ruhanas Harun, an expert on Vietnamese history and culture at the National Defence University of Malaysia, said she was touched to be invited to share the joy of the Vietnamese people. She remarked that remembering the struggle for independence is crucial as it embodies national pride in the historical traditions.

Similarly, Lee Yon Siang from Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah said he was impressed by the atmosphere of the event, which gave him deeper insight into the Vietnamese culture, from traditional attire to unique cuisine.

The ceremony took place in a solemn yet warm atmosphere. International friends also enjoyed a photo exhibition on Vietnam’s land and people, a graceful ao dai (traditional long dress) performance, cultural shows, and traditional Vietnamese dishes.
