This was announced at a press briefing held by the organizing committee for the congress, in Hanoi on January 10.

The congress will also be attended by former General Secretaries, State Presidents, Prime Ministers, National Assembly Chairmen, Politburo members, members of the secretariat and members of the Party’s Central Committee, Heroic Vietnamese Mothers, patriotic people, and intellectuals.

Politburo member To Huy Rua, Head of the Party’s Central Committee’s Commission for Education and Communication, said under the theme, “Continuing the Party’s leadership and fighting capacity, upholding national strength, comprehensively spurring the renovation, and laying the foundations for Vietnam to become a modern industrial country by 2020”, the Congress will review the Party’s 80-year history and supplement and develop the platform for the transitional period to socialism in Vietnam. He said the Congress will also hear a report presented by the Party’s Central Committee term 10, discuss and build up a socio-economic development strategy for the 2011-2020 period, amend some specific points in the Party regulations, and elect the Central Committee for term 11.

Nguyen Bac Son, member of the CPV Central Committee, said the Congress will try to increase the number of young people, women, ethnic minority people, and scientists in the Party’s Central Committee, with new members accounting for at least one-third of the total number.

According to the Organizing Committee, the Congress will decide whether it will directly elect the General Secretary or not.

More than 700 Vietnamese and foreign reporters have registered to report on the event.
