Saigon in 1990s through German lens

(VOV) -Photographer Hans-Peter Grumpe captured many images of famous places in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) decades ago, such as the HQs of the US Embassy, Tax Trading Centre, and Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica.

While living in Vietnam from 1991 to 1993, Hans-Peter Grumpe travelled around the countries. He visited HCM City in 1991 and took many photos of the city’s landmark buildings.

The city People’s Committee HQs, known as the Town Hall of the former Saigon administration is designed after belfries in northern France.
Thong Nhat (Unification) Palace was built in 1966. It is also known as Independence Palace.
Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica took shape in 1880. Its architecture remains unchanged.
Hans-Peter Grumpe photographed the US Embassy’s HQs in 1991. Nowadays, it becomes the office of the US General Consulate in HCM City.

Tax Trading Centre was built in 1880. It will be soon replaced by a new building.
Floating Hotel no longer exists.
Saigon Central Post Office was inaugurated in 1891, combining Asian and European architectural styles.
Ben Thanh Market was built between 1912 and 1914 and its name remains unchanged.
