Black Friday 2015: Deals in HCM City

(VOV) - Ho Chi Minh City’s shopping streets, malls and websites are awash with discounted goods on Friday as shoppers chase ‘Black Friday’ deals in a spending frenzy expected to top last year's record level.

Retailers at Pasteur Street in District 1 are hoping promotions will kick start trading after a weak November in sales, according to official statistics.

Black Friday, first introduced in the US is the day after the Thanksgiving holiday.

It was so named because consumer spending began to pick up on this day and

it gained popularity and became known as the start of the Christmas shopping season.

Retailers named it black because in days of manual accounting records black ink represented profits and red ink stood for losses.

Many large retailers in the US have traditionally begun to turn a profit for the year on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and moved from the red into the black.

It was first introduced into Britain in 2010 by US online retailer Amazon.

The day has now developed into an important fixture of many countries around the globe.

Despite all the publicity of sales, buyers should be wary that not all discounts are what they purport to be.
