The State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) of Myanmar on January 10 set the date of January 31 for the first parliamentary session of its new parliament at three levels, two months after the country’s historic general election.

Myanmar’s legislative body consists of the house of representatives, house of nationalities, and regional or state parliament and will elect the state's president and vice president.

In last November’s general election, the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), led by Prime Minister U Thein Sein, won a majority with 882 parliamentary seats or 76.43 percent of 1,154 seats.
