The largest lantern festival in the country takes place in Tuyen Quang annually to welcome the Mid-Autumn Festival, with the event scheduled to fall on September 29 this year.

At around 7 p.m. each day large crowds of local residents and tourists join a parade of giant lanterns that passes through many streets to celebrate the event.

Both children and adults are eager to view the colourful lanterns as the Mid-Autumn Festival draws near.

Many of the local people who participate in the parade have spent several months completing animal-shaped lanterns in order to wow audiences.

A number of incredible designs are showcased on the lanterns, which are then displayed during the street parade.

Each lantern stands at three metres tall and 12 metres long, costing around VND80 million to VND150 million.

Many tourists flock to Tuyen Quang in order to enjoy the festive atmosphere ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Tuyen Quang province boasts about 40 festivals each year. Among them is the Tuyen Citadel Festival which celebrates the Mid-Autumn Festival and is the largest one in the country, with hundreds of giant lanterns making up the procession.

Tuyen Quang has been the host of the lantern festival each year since 2004. It has been confirmed by the Vietnam Guinness Book of Records as having the most unique and largest lanterns in the nation.

The highlight of the festival this year will be a procession held at Nguyen Tat Thanh Square on September 23, with this event drawing the participation of 60 giant colourful lanterns.
