PM Pham Minh Chinh’s working trip to South Africa in the spotlight

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, his spouse, and the Vietnamese delegation arrive in Johannesburg on November 21, beginning their working trip to attend the G20 Summit and engage in bilateral activities in South Africa. Johannesburg is also the final stop of the Prime Minister’s official tour to Kuwait, Algeria, and South Africa from November 16 to 24.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh visits the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and symbolically strikes the gong to open the trading session. The JSE is considered the financial heart of South Africa and the largest stock exchange in Africa.

On November 21, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh hold talks with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, officially announcing the elevation of Vietnam–South Africa relations to a Strategic Partnership. Both sides commit to further strengthening cooperation in economy, trade, and investment, aiming to raise bilateral trade turnover to US$4–5 billion within the next two to three years.

Meeting with staff of the Vietnamese Embassy and members of the Vietnamese community in South Africa, the Prime Minister says he has requested the host country to further create favourable conditions for the Vietnamese community, particularly regarding issues related to residence permits and work permits.

On November 21, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with Fikile Mbalula, Secretary-General of the African National Congress (ANC). The ANC leader affirms that the ANC will continue to work closely with the Communist Party of Vietnam to advance the newly established partnership framework, contributing to regional peace and development.

Speaking at session I of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg on November 22, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh calls on the G20 to strengthen cooperation, refrain from politicising science and trade, and support developing countries through fair and balanced trade policies. He also affirms Vietnam’s readiness to actively engage in equal and mutually beneficial cooperation with other countries, the G20, and the international community.

He also calls on the G20 to take the lead in establishing fair, transparent, and inclusive standards for AI governance.

During Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s working visit, his spouse, Le Thi Bich Tran, meets with South African Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s spouse, Humile Mashatile, South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola’s spouse, Bawinile Lamola, and the Head of Spouses of the Diplomatic Corps in South Africa, Karem Ruiz de Rivieres.
