Long traffic jams hit major cities as people return home on national holiday

VOV.VN - Roads leading out of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City were hit by heavy traffic on April 30 as large numbers of people flocked to their hometowns in order to enjoy the four-day national holiday.

Giai Phong road leading to the Phap Van-Cau Gie Expressway in Hanoi is hit by severe congestion due to the sudden increase in traffic. Crowds of people remain keen to return to their hometowns despite local authorities warning of the high risk of the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic among the community.

Vehicles head out of the city centre as people enjoy the four-day holiday involving National Reunification Day on April 30 and Labour Day on May 1, thereby causing heavy traffic to form along the Phap Van-Cau Gie Expressway in Hanoi.

Vehicles are forced to move at a snail’s pace or come to a complete standstill on the expressway due to the sheer volume of traffic causing serious congestion.

Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City sees thousands of vehicles travel out of the southern city on the first day of the long public holiday, resulting in traffic jams forming for several hours. Pictures is a long line of vehicles at the Mai Chi Tho-Luong Dinh Cua intersection.
