The bodies of ex-Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, his son Mutassim and a top aide have been buried in secret in the desert, Libyan officials say.

A National Transitional Council (NTC) official said the bodies were buried at dawn in an unknown location. A few relatives and officials were in attendance and Islamic prayers were read.

Gaddafi's family wanted them buried outside the former leader's hometown of Sirte.

NTC leaders had expressed a preference for a secret burial.

Late on October 25, Dubai-based TV channel al-A'an broadcast footage it said showed Gaddafi's funeral.

In another movement, an explosion at a fuel tank left more than 50 people dead in the Libyan city of Sirte on October 24.

The explosion happened as a crowd waited nearby to fill their cars.

Local officials believe a spark from a nearby generator caused the fuel tank to explode.

The exact number of people who were killed and injured in the explosion was not yet clear.

According to one NTC official and the Syria-based Al-Rai television station, more than 100 people died.
