Vietnamese farm produce fetch high prices abroad

VOV.VN - Vietnamese products such as perilla leaves, jackfruit nuts, and lemon leaves are being sold at high prices on foreign markets, bringing in export values of millions of US dollars.

A bundle of perilla leaves costs several thousands of Vietnam dong at Vietnamese markets but one exported perilla leaf can be sold for VND500-700.

The first exporter of perilla leaves to Japan says each hectare can provide a harvest of 17-18 million leaves, earning VND2.5 billion. However, the cultivation process must strictly follow Japanese standards.

Jackfruit nuts are thrown away in Vietnam but are a popular product in Japan. A pack of jackfruit nuts is sold at VND200,000 per kilo in Japanese supermarkets.

Lemon leaves are sold at VND22,000-24,000 per kilo on the European market.

People are quite surprised upon learning that a fresh banana leaf can be found for sale at VND470,000 on Amazon’s Japanese website.

Some businesses buy banana leaves at VND4,000 per kilo for export to the US.

A kilo of dragon fruit costs VND180,000-200,000 in Japan while being available for VND2,000 per kilo sometimes on the domestic market.

Dragon fruit has been exported to 40 countries and territories, however, to ship to other countries, it must meet strict export requirements.

The price of Vietnamese mangoes in Japanese supermarkets is around US$8-10 per kilo.

In 2016, Vietnam had around 87,000 hectares of mangoes with an annual output of more than 969,000 tons. The Republic of Korea, Japan, and Singapore are three major importers of Vietnamese mangoes.

Luc Ngan lychees are sold at high prices in Japan, fetching around VND400,000 for 12 lychees.
