Vietnam Ambassador pitches TPP in Washington DC

(VOV) - Vietnam Ambassador to the US Pham Quang Vinh recently attended the 48th meeting of the Emergency Committee for American Trade (ECAT) in Washington DC.

Speaking at the conference, Vinh highlighted the sound relations of Vietnam and the US, especially singling out trade and investment relations and the significance of the trans-pacific partnership (TPP) for Vietnam.

In the context of the 20th anniversary of Vietnam-US diplomatic ties, Vinh recounted important landmarks and achievements in the two nations’ relations over past decades.

Trade has increased 70 fold to US$36 billion over the past twenty years he said, adding that currently, the US is the largest export market of Vietnam and the seventh largest foreign investor with investment of US$13 billion.

Vinh also highlighted the significance of the recent historic Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong visit to the US and his talk with President Barack Obama at the White House.

At the meeting, the two leaders adopted a joint vision statement on Vietnam-US relations and devised measures to deepen the comprehensive partnership in a wide host of fields.

Regarding the TPP, Vinh stressed the strategic meaning of the agreement for member countries, including Vietnam, in the principle of mutual benefit for peace, security, and prosperity in the region.

Vinh underscored that Vietnam has been striving with great effort along with other countries to soon finalize negotiations on the TPP and pledged to strictly implement it when approved.

As the lowest income country among TPP member countries, the TPP will help Vietnam expand export markets, generate more jobs for its citizens and attract more foreign investment.

Ambassador Vinh appreciated the role of ECAT and its support for equal trade liberalization and called on the ECAT and member businesses to strengthen cooperation and enhance trade and investment relations.
