Start-up promises to transform shrimp industry

(VOV) - The Vietnam Food Company (VNF) has announced a start-up joint venture with the CJ Cheil Jedang Group to produce shrimp meal as a by-product of Vietnam’s shrimp industry.

There is a tremendous tonnage of shrimp heads, shells and other waste produced annually in Vietnam’s shrimp industry and utilizing it to produce feedstuff makes good economic sense, said VNF Deputy Director Pham Le Nhat Quang.

The CJ Cheil Jedang Group is a food and bio business holding company and a subsidiary of CJ Group, the largest food processor in the RoK.

Currently, it has been estimated that the shrimp industry produces 100,000 tonnes of shrimp waste annually— but only around 30 tonnes are used to process animal food, Quang stressed.

Although exact details of the agreement were not disclosed, Quang said there are other plans in the works to produce other pharmaceuticals, protein supplements and products from shrimp waste in the near future as well.
