Hungarian opposition leader Victor Orban has declared victory in the parliamentary election, saying it was a vote "to defeat hopelessness".

With 99% of votes counted, Fidesz had won 206 seats in the 386-member parliament, the Socialists 28, and Jobbik 26.

The far-right Jobbik party captured seats in parliament for the first time, winning more than a million votes.

Mr Orban, who is set to be the next prime minister, promised to cut taxes to stimulate the economy.

The final division of the 386 seats in Parliament will only be decided after the second round of the election scheduled on 25 April, but Fidesz looks close to achieving its goal of a two-thirds majority in the new Parliament.
