Leaders of foreign countries have offered profound sympathy to Vietnam over serious losses in property and human lives caused by floods in northern mountainous provinces.

In a message sent to Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on August 14, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao expressed his belief that under the leadership of the Vietnamese Party and Government, flood victims will soon overcome the aftermath and return to normal life.

Deputy Prime Minister-cum-Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem also received sympathy from Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs Yang Jiechi.

The same day, Chinese ambassador to Vietnam Hu Qianwen handed over to Deputy Foreign Minister Ho Xuan Son US$50,000 donated by the Chinese embassy staff to help the flood victims.

German Chancellor Horst Koehler and Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean Claude Juncker also sent messages of sympathy to Vietnamese leaders on August 13.
