Thirty-five people were killed after a fire scorched a hospital in eastern India Friday, authorities said.

Forty people were also injured in the blaze at the five-story hospital in the city of Kolkata, said D.P. Biswas, the additional director-general of the fire department in the area.

The victims died of smoke inhalation Biswas said.

The blaze started at about 4 a.m. in the basement of the hospital. Authorities were trying to determine what caused the fire.
