A Finnish-funded project to control trafficking in women and children has been carried out in the Red River Delta province of Nam Dinh, focusing on preventive measures.

The project has helped set up 16 clubs to support the control of women and children trafficking, drawing a total of 1,500 members, in four villages considered hotbeds. The clubs have held meetings and training courses for women to raise their awareness of human trafficking crimes and equip them with self-defence knowledge.

The provincial Women's Association has opened consultation offices to help those women who intend to go abroad for employment to ensure their safety.

Pre-project surveys have shown that over 76 women from the four target villages were taken abroad by human trafficking rings, of whom only six managed to return home.

Most of the affected females were between 18 and 35 years of age. They were poorly educated and from low income families.
