More than 150 Vietnamese garment, textile, footwear and chemical manufacturers attended a seminar in Hanoi on May 14 to discuss the European Union regulation on the use of chemicals in manufacturing.

The event was co-organized by the European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (EuroCham), Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services, the United Nations Industrial Development Oganisation (UNIDO), the Vietnam Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoTI) and the Hanoi Planning and Investment Department.

The EU regulation, called Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and restriction of Chemicals (REACH), stipulates that manufacturers are obliged to identify the type and amount of chemicals used in products.

Eurocham Director Nicholas Greenfield said REACH seminars aimed to help Vietnamese enterprises fully understand this complex law and the implications of the legislation of REACH for their business.

David Horlock, an official of Bureau Veritas, said REACH has a wide range of implications for brand owners, retailers and their supply chains, in exporting to the EU market as well as Asia and US market.

MoTI’s International Cooperation Department Deputy Director Dang Phan Thu Huong said Vietnamese businesses need to find and provide the information on their products to their suppliers. She also pledged that the government will assist the provision of information and help businesses access and meet REACH requirements.
