The Can Tho City People’s Committee on April 3 began the implementation of the second phase of an urban upgrade project which is partially funded by the World Bank (WB).

Within this phase, which will run through 2014, US$40 million will be used to upgrade more than 100 alleys and dredge canals running through 12 wards in the city.

The WB has contributed half of the cost while the remainder will be extracted from the city’s budget.

The urban upgrade project in Can Tho, with a total investment capital of US$68 million, is designed to improve the city’s infrastructure including the upgrade of 200 alleys and main canals as well as the building of apartments for dislocated citizens.

Together with Can Tho, Nam Dinh, Hai Phong and Ho Chi Minh City have also received funding from the WB for upgrading their infrastructure.
