Vietnamese exports to US enjoy sharp increase

VOV.VN - The United States continued to represent the largest buyer of local goods during the first quarter of the year, with total export turnover raking in US$21.2 billion, representing a year-on-year rise of 32.8%, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

Moving forward, this strong level of growth is anticipated to continue over the following months, despite the ongoing negative impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Most notably, export turnover of fruit and vegetables, along with aquatic products to the US market throughout the reviewed period stood at US$23.4 million and US$189.15 million, marking rises of 3.7% and 5.4%, respectively, in comparison to the same period from last year.

Statistics released by the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) indicate that the export value of machinery, equipment and spare parts to the US enjoyed a surge of 215% to US$1.58 billion in January of this year.

Furthermore, the export turnover of telephone and components to the US market hit US$6.1 billion in January, an increase of US$3.4 billion from the corresponding period last year.

According to  data put together by the MoIT, the purchase power of the US has recovered in recent months, thereby presenting a good opportunity for Vietnamese products amid the global economy still being severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tran Thanh Hai, deputy general director of the MoIT’s Export-Import Department, emphasized the need to pay special attention to promoting digitalisation and applying e-commerce in relation to export activities.

Moreover, the Government, along with various ministries, sectors, and localities, must outline new orientations amid great changes occurring globally, Hai said, adding that the MoIT will propose that a new strategy be issued for export activities in the near future.
