Vietnamese exports to Canada hit nearly US$1 billion in two months

VOV.VN - Vietnamese enterprises exported commodities worth US$964 million to Canada in the first two months of the year, down 1.3% compared to the same period last year, according to Vietnam Customs.

Major export items include garments and textiles, electronics, footwear, machinery, equipment, tools, and spare parts.

Vietnamese exports to Canada in the first two months showed strong growth in certain major categories, particularly footwear and electronics phones that correspondingly fetched US$84.3 million and US$134 million, up 24.5% and 20%. However, some other product groups experienced sharp declines, with machinery, equipment, tools, other spare parts and garments & textiles falling by 44% and 12% respectively to US$90 million and US$150 million in revenue.

Last year witnessed Vietnamese exports to Canada record impressive growth with turnover reaching nearly US$6.4 billion, up nearly 13.5% compared to 2023. The sharp increase was partly driven by the effective utilization of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

In fact, since the CPTPP took effect back in 2019, Vietnam's exports to Canada have seen an upturn of nearly 60%, from just US$3.8 billion in 2018 to over US$6.3 billion by the end of 2022.

According to industry insiders, Canada is considered a potential export market for Vietnamese goods, while it is also a gateway for local enterprises to access the large North American market.

Vietnam is Canada's leading trading partner in ASEAN and Canada's sixth largest trading partner in the group of 40 Indo-Pacific countries.
