The Vietnam Business Association (VBA) in Russia held a meeting in Moscow on March 21 to review work in 2009 and devise tasks for 2010.

VBA chairman Tran Dang Chung highlighted the difficulties facing VBA and the Vietnamese community in Russia as well as the impact of the global economic crisis, the decision by local authority to close Cherkyzovo market and guidelines to tighten tariffs on workers. He praised the Russian Government for assisting and creating the best conditions for Vietnamese residents to live and work. He also pointed out the significant achievements that the VBA obtained in 2009 in the fields of external affairs, investment promotion, and assisting the Vietnamese community, such as raising funds for Vietnamese residents in Russia and at home.

VBA Vice chairman Do Xuan Hoang listed key activities in 2010, such as receiving State President Nguyen Minh Triet to attend the victory May 9 and Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh to visit Russia in July, organising the Vietnam Business Forum in Moscow in September and exchanging visits among Vietnamese businesses.

At the meeting, Vietnamese Ambassador to Russia Bui Dinh Binh affirmed that the ties of traditional friendship and the trusted and strategic partnership between Vietnam and Russia are developing well. Two-way trade turnover increased from US$1.64 billion in 2008 to over US$1.7 billion in 2009, despite the impact of the global financial crisis.

The meeting focused discussions on issues, such as removing difficulties for Vietnamese businesses and residents, and finding new business methods in line with Russian law.
