“Vietnam Wings” launched to support RoK firms seeking business opportunities in Vietnam

VOV.VN - Korea Western Power (West Power), a state-run power company under Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), on May 11 launched “Vietnam Wings,” an alliance aimed at helping small and medium-sized enterprises of the Republic of Korea (RoK) expand into the Vietnamese market.

According to West Power, the initiative comes as RoK energy companies step up their expansion strategies in Southeast Asia, with Vietnam as the starting point. The launch ceremony was held at the company’s headquarters in South Chungcheong Province. The alliance is designed as a partnership support model to help RoK partner companies explore business opportunities in Vietnam.

West Power is one of six major power generation companies spun off from KEPCO following reforms of the RoK’s  electricity sector in the early 2000s. The company said the name “Vietnam Wings” shows  the goal of helping SMEs “spread their wings” into overseas markets. The alliance currently comprises 17 companies, including seven firms that participated in West Power’s Vietnam market promotion program in 2025.

Under the plan, West Power will serve as the supporting agency, providing business networks, technology testing support, market access support and strategic consulting. Participating companies, meanwhile, will directly implement localization and business development strategies in Vietnam.

West Power also plans to work with the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and local partners to support customer development, business matching and the establishment of legal entities in Vietnam.

The program will be implemented in three phases: network building and promotion; market entry through trade fairs, exhibitions and export consulting; and business stabilization through the establishment of local companies and project commercialization.

Notably, West Power plans to open an export support center named “Seohaero” in Ho Chi Minh City later in May. The center will provide office space, interpretation services, transportation and business support infrastructure for RoK companies operating in Vietnam.

Following the Vietnam model, West Power said it plans to expand the initiative into Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa to build a global support network for RoK businesses.

Vietnam is emerging as an important destination in the global expansion strategies of RoK energy and industrial companies thanks to its strong economic growth, rapidly rising electricity demand and an increasingly open investment environment.

In recent years, RoK companies in the power, infrastructure, logistics and technology sectors have expanded their presence in Vietnam not only in manufacturing, but also in renewable energy, supply chains and industrial support services.

According to Lee Jung-bok, President of West Power, the rapid changes in the RoK’s domestic electricity market meant overseas expansion was no longer optional but had become essential for partner companies. He said the Vietnam Wings program would help RoK companies strengthen competitiveness and expand their operations in the global market.
