Vietnam, UK boost clean energy and trade cooperation
VOV.VN - Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hoang Long on October 30 held a working session with the Minister for Industry at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and the Department for Business and Trade (DBT), within the framework of Party General Secretary To Lam’s official visit to the UK.

Representing Vietnam were officials from the Department of Foreign Market Development, the Vietnam Trade Office in the UK, and the Vietnam National Industry and Energy Group. On the UK side, attendees included the British Ambassador to Vietnam, Iain Frew, and the British Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, Alex Smith.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on clean energy cooperation with the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and an MoU on product safety with the UK Department for Business and Trade.
The two MoUs were negotiated and signed on the basis of close, effective cooperation between the Ministry of Industry and Trade and its UK partners in the fields of trade and clean energy. They promise substantial development potential and set out concrete directions for cooperation within the pillars of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that Vietnam and the United Kingdom established during Party General Secretary To Lam’s visit.
The signing of the MoU on clean energy cooperation establishes the framework for UK-Vietnam clean energy cooperation and marks a step up in strategic cooperation. It aligns with both countries’ net-zero and sustainable growth goals, and complements the signing of green finance cooperation with the Ministry of Finance of Vietnam. Through this document, the two sides consolidate and broaden the clean energy cooperation framework, including expanding renewable energy; strengthening grid infrastructure and transmission; mobilizing public and private finance to support the green transition; improving the legal framework to promote clean energy investment; and accelerating innovation and technology exchange to ensure sustainable green growth in the future.
The Memorandum on product safety reaffirms the parties’ desire to ramp up trade cooperation and to promote positive development in bilateral goods markets through cooperation on methods and measures to prevent unsafe products and goods; to support raising knowledge and awareness about preventing unsafe products and goods; and to exchange experience and best practices in developing, managing and operating e-commerce platforms.
The signing of these two documents accelerates the effective implementation of existing cooperation frameworks and realizes content set out in the Joint Statement that upgraded the comprehensive partnership between the two countries, producing positive results and contributing to the economic development of both nations.
After the signing ceremony, Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long discussed with Chris McDonald active bilateral and multilateral cooperation activities between the two countries in the fields of trade and energy.
Immediately after the bilateral meeting, Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long spoke at the Vietnam-UK business reception hosted by the UK Department for Business and Trade, chaired by the UK Prime Minister’s trade envoy to Vietnam, Matt Western, with the participation of leaders and representatives of major ministries and agencies from both countries.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long reviewed the two countries’ proud cooperation achievements to date and outlined directions and prospects for the period ahead.
